How Do I Train My Dog to Stay

Dog Behavior Training: How to train your dog to "stay" when entering and leaving a doorway

certainly, for you and your dog to be successful in getting your dog to learn obedience training, you need to reinforce these learned commands by incorporating them into your dogs daily life. Do it this way... use that sit-stay command when you leave the door of your house, get out of your car with the dog, or any other situation that will help you by a dog sitting and staying. Simply take advantage of your dogs smarts in knowing these commands. Just reinforce them by having your dog perform.

There will be tons of benefits from this way of dog training but the top benefit will be helping to protect your dog's life. Your dog has no idea of the potential threats that exist outside of the home. Some dogs are just simply happy-go-lucky waiting to dart outside unexpectedly. He's certainly better off not getting lost or not getting hit by a car.

Dogs often like to get out of the car before anyone else. Remember the outside will basically be a “play” area that your dog loves to explore. You might think that your dog jumping out of the car, being the first one out, after arriving home will be cute. Think about it this way... getting conditioned to have the free rein of getting out of the car at home may make your dog think that he can do that anywhere. Your home might be safe for this to happen but other places will likely be unsafe. For example, there might be a moving cars in the parking lot, etc.

Remember, you definitely don't want to keep your training of your dog using the command “stay” just in the doorway of your house. Think about all possibilities where using this command will help ensure your dog's protection... then go a step further. Attempt to use it whenever you see it to be beneficial whether it's for your dog's protection or not.

Teaching the command
let's say you just arrived home... give him the command to “Stay” before you continue to open the car door. If he tries to jump into the front seat in order to get out, simply close the door before he leaves. You'll then have to move him back to the back seat to begin again. Now look at it a different way. If you open the back door after you have given the command “stay”, and he jumps outside the door before you say “okay”, then you'll just need to get him back inside the car in order to do it again. You can generally do this until he gets it right unless you see him getting tired. In that case, you'll postpone the training session to later.

The point at which your dog correctly responds to the command “stay”, will mean that it won't matter which door you open in the house or the car, your dog will not go through it without you saying “okay”.

The best time to perform this training session of learning the command “stay” will be when your dog exhibits a calm demeanor. Doing it this way will make your task easier of teaching him this command. A sure way to get him into this state of being will be giving him plenty of exercise before the training session.

In order to teach them this command, put him on a leash... positioning him into the state of sitting and staying (using the commands sit and stay) just a few feet from the doorway. You'll want to slowly open the door. If you see the dog getting up, simply shut the door and get him back into the sitting and staying position using your appropriate commands. You'll then just start over to do it again. During this whole time, make sure you have treats ready and in visible view of your dog.
