Dog Training Collars: Learning the basics of dog training collars

You might be getting a dog and wonder what kind of dog training collars will be best in order to train your dog well. Which ones will actually be safe to use? Although various controversies exist amongst professionals about what will be the best dog training collars to actually use, most will agree that using a training collar will be best especially when teaching older dogs. You'll find various types of dog training collars available including the buckle collar, choke collar and prong collar.

The type of dog training collar you use will certainly depend on various factors involved including your own strength and size, your dogs strength and size, the character of your dog and his ability to withstand pain. However, you'll actually find in most training obedience classes that the buckle and choke collars will be used most often.

Whether or not you are training your dog or simply walking it every day, you do need to buy a buckle collar for everyday use. These callers will be the only ones that you can leave on your dog that will be safe for all day. This type of collar will be the best for using on puppies that will be younger than a third of the year old. Most people should actually start out training your dog using the buckle collar. The size of that collar will need to be snug but not overly tight. Later if you think you need more control over your dog, you might decide to purchase one of the other training collars.

Especially for training, those dogs that have narrow heads might easily pull themselves out of a buckle collar. Also, those dogs that will exhibit a lot of strength during training may not be controlled to well using just a buckle collar. In these two instances you might consider using a choke collar instead.

The next option you might consider will be the choke collar for dog training purposes. You'll usually find these to be made out of a material that will be nylon or chain. In most cases it will be a chain. However, it might be best to use a nylon choke collar since they tend to be more gentle on dogs necks. In addition, those choke collars made out of nylon have less ability to pull hear from your dogs coat.

Using this choke collar will be the most difficult of all collars. It has to be used in a specific way so that it does not hurt your dog's throat. You'll need to know two things in order to use it properly. First, if your dog will be to your left side, the connected part of the collar which attaches to the leash needs to come over the dogs neck from the other side. Second, placing it over your dog's head will involve making a “P” shape with the collar seen from your view looking straight at the dog.

Basically, the only main time the prong collar will be used is when your dog has tremendous strength that will be hard for you to control. Many professionals don't encourage owners to use the prong collar in many instances. However, others do suggest that it can be used for certain reasons very effectively.
