Dog Behavior Aggression Prevention
Having a dog that can be fairly aggressive causes many problems for the household and other people. As a dog owner, you simply do not want to take your dog out for many walks when your dog will be aggressive to everyone or thing that passes by. Your dog basically is an extension of you. If your dog tends to act aggressively to most people including children, they won't be able to enjoy him. Along the same lines, you want people that come into your home to feel welcome but having an aggressive dog prevents that from happening.
Most of the time, aggression in dogs will have been developed over time. It usually stems from an inability to understand how to socialize with humans and also dogs. These aggressive dogs will usually be this way out of dominance or fear. The ones being this way out of dominance will be much harder to correct than the ones out of fear. A dog that sees himself as being dominant does so out of an innate need for someone to be in control. Dogs have the natural instinct to live in groups or packs of dogs. All dogs will be socialized within that group to be calm submissive including the alpha dog or pack leader.
In your own home, if you do not exhibit and become the pack leader of your dog, he will likely take that role upon himself. That means that your dog could go to the extremes of becoming aggressive in order to fulfill his role as pack leader.
Some dogs will be so aggressive that it will be important to get a professional to help make that dog submissive. Therefore, if the problem of your dog being aggressive seems to be way out of your control, you'll need to get professional help. This help you acquire need not be from a regular dog trainer because many dog trainers don't understand thoroughly what it means to be a pack leader. You'll likely need to get the help from a dog behavior specialist.
To start moving your dog away from being aggressive you will simply have to become the pack leader of your dog. Not only you can be pack leader but everyone else in your family can also become pack leaders for your dog. In fact, it will be very important that they do exhibit this role. Being the pack leader really does not mean that you have to be domineering to the extent of being a monster. A proper pack leader will actually treat the dog fairly and humanely. The pack leader will be trusted by the dog who believes that his (the dog's) emotional and physical well-being will be protected.
Acting as a proper pack leader does not also mean being permissive in any respect. You'll need to simply be stern with your actions and commands. You will simply be taking on the roles of a father, teacher, Guardian, friend and leader all rolled into one. The pack leader will command respect from the dog.
